18th Century Queen Anne Walnut Chest of Drawers

18th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A fine early 18th-century Queen Anne walnut chest of drawers, circa 1710, of unusually small and elegant proportions. The quarter-veneered and feather-banded top is framed with cross-banding, above two short and two graduated long drawers, retaining brass handles. Raised on shaped bracket feet, the chest displays particularly attractive figured walnut veneers and a warm, rich colour and patination throughout. A charming example of early Queen Anne furniture, its compact scale making it especially suitable for a bedroom, dressing room or smaller interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early eighteenth century during the reign of Queen Anne, this style marked a shift towards lighter, more refined furniture with an emphasis on walnut timber, graceful curves, restrained decoration, and proportion.

Chests from this era were typically constructed with a softwood or oak carcass veneered in decorative walnut or burr walnut, featuring solid wood drawer linings and hand-cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, natural wood shrinkage around drawer fronts, historical hand-planing marks on rear panels, and period-correct brass hardware with appropriate surface patination.

A period walnut chest functions as a grounding focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area when contrasted against contemporary artwork, modern lighting fixtures, and neutral wall colours.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the original finish.
