This Queen Anne Revival walnut chest on stand dates from 1930. The piece is constructed from warm brown timber with burr walnut veneers, crossbanding, and brass hardware, presenting a symmetric grain pattern across the drawer fronts along with pierced back plates, shaped escutcheons, and turned bun feet. The upper section contains a top row of two short drawers above three long graduated drawers, while the lower stand incorporates three further short drawers above a shaped apron and turned legs joined by a stretcher. An old repair is present on the back right leg. The chest measures 136 cm high, 101.5 cm wide, and 53.5 cm deep. It suits placement in a living room, bedroom, or hallway as a storage unit for clothing, linens, or personal items while serving as a decorative surface for lamps or ornaments.

The chest on stand, often called a highboy, originated in England during the late seventeenth century under the reign of William and Mary. The form gained widespread popularity in the Queen Anne period, elevating standard chest-of-drawers storage onto a raised frame with turned legs or cabriole supports.

These pieces typically utilise figured walnut or burr walnut veneers applied over a solid oak or pine carcass. Construction methods include hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, turned stretchers, and solid brass drop handles or backplates.

Twentieth-century revival pieces, such as those made in the 1930s, often display uniform machine dovetailing, smoother modern drawer runners, and standardised interior construction. Earlier examples feature hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetails, and signs of hand-forged hardware installation.

A chest on stand functions effectively as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Pair the rich figured timber with light wall paint and neutral soft furnishings to highlight the geometric grain patterns.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber veneer. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber shrinkage.
