Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Edwardian tall oak chest of drawers from 1920 belongs in a gentleman's library. The piece has a dark brown repolished finish and six stacked drawers fitted with brass cup handles, alongside panelled sides and square feet. The drawers vary in depth with a depth of 12.5 cm, and the entire unit measures 120.5 cm high, 63.5 cm wide, and 39.5 cm deep. Practical for everyday storage, this piece suits a bedroom, study, or hallway to keep clothes, paperwork, or accessories organised. The tall and narrow proportions make it a space-saving option for rooms with limited floor space while offering substantial vertical storage capacity.

FAQs

A tall oak chest of drawers, often referred to as a tallboy or semainier, is a vertical storage unit designed to maximise floor space by offering multiple stacked drawers. Originating in the late 17th century and evolving through the Edwardian era, these pieces were commonly used in bedrooms and dressing rooms for textile and garment organisation.

Traditional tall chests are constructed from solid oak or oak veneers, featuring dovetail joints on the drawer boxes for structural integrity. Brass cup handles or drop handles are frequently fitted, accompanied by mortise and tenon joinery on the main carcass frame.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, solid wood drawer linings, and natural wear around handle fixings and drawer runners. Look for period brass hardware, original keyholes, and subtle variations in wood grain or colour caused by historic wax polishes.

Balance the deep tones of dark oak by placing the unit against neutral walls, such as off-white or soft warm grey. Style the top surface with minimal accessories, such as a ceramic lamp or framed artwork, to maintain clean visual proportions.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year following the wood grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
