Victorian naturalists popularised the collection and display of butterflies and insects in glass-fronted wooden cabinets as both a scientific pursuit and a decorative art form.

Traditional cases were typically built using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring glass panels, cork backing sheets, and paper pin labels.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-written locality data in archaic ink, aged paper linings, traditional brass hardware, and subtle signs of oxidisation on the insect pins.

These pieces fit well within eclectic, academic, or maximalist schemes, often hung on gallery walls or placed on shelves alongside leather-bound books and brass objects.

Specimens must be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintained in low-humidity environments to deter pest damage, and sealed tightly against dust.
