FAQs

Rococo style frames are characterised by elaborate, asymmetrical scrollwork, flowing acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and shell motifs. Popularised in France during the 18th century and widely revived in the 19th century, these frames feature dramatic fluid relief created through gesso moulding on timber substrates.

These frames were constructed using a hand-carved solid wood core layered with gesso, a mixture of chalk and animal glue binder. Intricate surface details were built up using moulded composition material, which was then sealed, coated in clay bole, and finished with oil or water gilding using gold leaf.

Authentic period frames typically exhibit natural surface cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, revealing the underlying wood or coloured clay bole layer beneath worn gilding. Older frames also feature hand-cut joinery, square forged nails, and signs of manual carving on the reverse timber backing.

A large Rococo frame can be mounted above a fireplace mantle or sideboard, or leaned against a neutral wall as an architectural accent piece. It can be displayed empty to highlight its structural details, fitted with a mirror plate, or used to enclose contemporary canvas artwork for visual contrast.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to clean recessed areas without disturbing loose gesso or leafing. Avoid using water, damp cloths, solvents, or commercial polishes, as moisture dissolves traditional gesso binders and permanently damages gold leafing.
