Dutch Delftware originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century as a tin-glazed earthenware designed to emulate imported Chinese porcelain. Characterised by cobalt blue and polychrome hand-painted decoration over an opaque white glaze, these pieces frequently featured floral, avian, and landscape motifs.

These dishes were formed from local earthenware clay, press-moulded or thrown to create fluted borders, and coated with a lead glaze containing tin oxide. Mineral pigment glazes were hand-painted onto the unfired surface before a final high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic period Delftware features a soft earthenware body with characteristic edge chipping or glaze loss, known as fritting, along raised rims. The reverse often shows three spur marks from kiln supports, uneven glaze pooling, and hand-applied underglaze painter initials or marks.

A decorative ceramic dish can be mounted on a neutral wall using a padded plate hanger or supported upright on a plate stand inside a glazed display cabinet. Placing historical tin-glazed ceramics against contemporary backdrop materials creates visual interest through texture and colour contrast.
