C.1902 the Cape and Its Story by Mary Douglas. Leather Bound Book.

1900 - 1920
Description

'The Cape and Its Story' by Mary Douglas, c.1902. Published by T. Nelson & Sons.

Tree calf binding. Stanmore Park coat of arms to the front board and its motto, 'In deo confido et persevero' ['I trust in God and persevere']. Stanmore Park Preparatory School established in the former Drummond Estate created around 1880 and closed in 1929. Its headmaster from 1901 to 1929 was the Reverend Vernon Royle, a former Lancashire and England Cricketer. The bookplate to the pastedown has been neatly cut and removed, presumably as it contained Vernon Royle's signature.

Some wear to the front board hinge with a little movement but it remains firmly attached. Gilt stamped decoration to board edges and spine.

Marbled endpapers. Some spotting to preliminary pages but otherwise the pages remain clean, bright and free from inscription.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Thomas Nelson imprint with three-colour frontispiece: early twentieth-century trade book printing.
Tree calf binding with gilt-tooled spine compartments: standard school prize presentation of the decade.
Marbled page edges matching the marbled endpapers: decorative treatment.
Foxing spots across the flyleaves: oxidised impurities in machine-made wood-pulp paper.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Edwardian leather-bound book, titled "The Cape and Its Story" by Mary Douglas and published around 1902 by T. Nelson & Sons, is in an Edwardian style. The book features a warm brown tree calf binding finished with gold tooling, raised spine bands, a gilded Stanmore Park coat of arms to the front board, and a panelled spine. The spine shows five raised bands separating six decorated panels, with the title and author stamped in gilt within the second compartment, while the board edges display delicate gilt stamp decoration. Wear is visible at the front board hinge with slight movement, though it remains firmly attached. The book measures 18.25 cm high and 13.5 cm wide. Today, this piece finds its place on a bookshelf or desk within a gentleman's library, study or reading corner. It functions as both a decorative literary object and a piece of historical ephemera reflecting the provenance of Stanmore Park Preparatory School and its era.

Edwardian leather-bound books from the early 20th century often feature full or half calfskin or morocco leather bindings, highlighted by intricate gold tooling and raised bands along the spine.

Fine bookbindings traditionally utilised calfskin, morocco leather, or vellum over heavy board, embellished with genuine gold leaf tooling, marbling, and woven cloth.

Authentic turn-of-the-century volumes display period-specific typography, distinct raised spine bands, natural leather surface patina, and hand-tooled gilt details.

Antique leather volumes can be stacked horizontally on a coffee table or desk to add height, grouped vertically on open shelving, or paired alongside contemporary design pieces for visual contrast.

Keep antique leather books away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, handle them with clean hands, and periodically apply specialist leather balm to prevent drying.
