This Georgian cat stand functions as a historic trivet or bowl support, designed in an English country house style. The turned fruitwood object displays a dark brown timber finish with a rich polished sheen. Six distinct bobbin-detailed turned spindle legs radiate outwards from a solid central sphere in a striking caltrop configuration. The turned spindles feature alternating baluster and ring mouldings terminating in small spherical finials. The standalone accessory measures 23 cm high by 27 cm wide and 27 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, this decorative wooden stand serves multiple practical functions near a fireplace hearth, on side tables, or upon mantelpieces as a display riser for bowls and small decorative vessels. The compact antique accessory integrates smoothly into traditional and eclectic decorative schemes, adding sculptural interest and authentic period character to surface displays.

FAQs

A wooden cat stand, historically known as a fireplace cat, is a three-dimensional object featuring turned wood spindles radiating from a central sphere. Used primarily during the 18th and 19th centuries, it was designed to hold plates, bowls, or teapots near a hearth fire, maintaining stability regardless of which way it rested.

These pieces were typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, oak, or fruitwood using wood-turning techniques. Metal versions were also produced in brass or cast iron, though turned timber versions were favoured for domestic tabletop and hearth use.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-turning, slight asymmetry from natural timber shrinkage over time, and a warm aged patina. Marks from historical proximity to heat, gentle wear on the spindle tips, and traditional joinery indicate genuine age.

An antique cat stand functions as a sculptural accent on a sideboard, mantlepiece, or open bookshelf. It can also be repurposed as a unique tabletop display stand for decorative ceramics or bowls.

Keep the wood hydrated and protected by regularly applying a natural beeswax polish with a soft cloth. Avoid exposure to extreme heat, damp environments, or direct sunlight to prevent splitting and loss of original finish.
