FAQs

Carved wooden finials and architectural elements were extensively used in French interior joinery and furniture making from the 17th century onwards, often serving as terminal points on cabinetry, panelling, and mantelpieces.

These pieces are typically hand-carved from native European hardwoods such as oak, pine, or walnut, frequently finished with gesso, paint, or gilding to complement formal architectural schemes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining tool marks left by hand chisels, the natural oxidisation and patina of the wood beneath any paint layers, and traditional joinery or attachment methods consistent with period manufacturing.

Such pieces can be mounted on a wall as standalone sculptural objects, displayed on a mantelpiece, or integrated into bespoke cabinetry to introduce historical texture and visual weight to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a dry, soft brush and avoiding liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals that can compromise fragile historical paint layers and dry out the underlying wood.
