Console tables gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in 17th and 18th century France and Italy, designed specifically to stand against a wall beneath a mirror.

These tables are traditionally constructed from carved softwoods or hardwoods, coated in gesso, and meticulously water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf before being topped with a polished slab of marble.

Authenticity is identified through hand-carved detailing, the presence of aged gesso with underlying bole (often red clay), natural wear revealing the metallic layers underneath, and period-appropriate joinery.

Pairing a highly ornate piece with clean, minimalist surroundings or contemporary neutral walls creates a striking focal point, balancing historic craftsmanship with modern simplicity.

Giltwood requires delicate care; it should be dusted gently with a soft, dry feather duster or microfibre cloth, avoiding all water, liquid cleaners, and chemical polishes which can strip the thin gold leaf layer.
