This card table is an 1890 piece in the Louis XVI style. It uses mahogany, bois satiné, and boxwood stringing with ormolu mounts in warm brown tones, alongside a green baize-lined playing surface, geometric parquetry, a bacchic scene frieze plaque, acanthus ring capitals, and floriate paterae. It stands 74 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. Placed against a narrow wall space in a home, it functions as a games table. The piece has fluted tapering legs, gilt bronze toupie feet, and concertina-action extending mechanisms with veneer panels on the top and sides. It is in unrestored original condition with visible wood grain patterns, metallic mount details, and turned elements.

The Louis XVI style originated in 18th-century France, characterised by Neoclassical symmetry, straight lines, fluted tapering legs, and gilded classical ornamentation.

These tables commonly incorporate hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or kingwood arranged in geometric timber patterns, accented with cast ormolu mounts and internal felt or baize playing surfaces.

Authenticity is assessed by inspecting hand-cut joinery, original secondary woods like oak or pine, chiselled bronze mounts fixed with traditional pins, and hand-applied French polish finishes.

When folded, a card table functions as a console or side table positioned against a wall, beneath artwork, or positioned in a hallway to hold decorative objects.

Timber surfaces require regular dusting with a dry cloth and periodic applications of clear beeswax polish, while ormolu mounts should only be dusted gently to preserve their original aged patina.
