Exceptional 19th Century Anglo-indian Coromandel Centre Table

19th century
Description

This is a truly exceptional piece of Anglo-Indian furniture. Made from ebonised padouk, ebony and Coromandel with maple inlaid boarder. The figuring to the Coromandel timber is fabulous and is what makes this table so impressive and rare. Coromandel is a timber not often used for furniture and more for very fine boxes or tea caddies so to have an entire table top really is remarkable.

The table is entirely original and in very clean condition with minor marks consistent with age. The base is finely carved and retains the original steel casters and steel swivel brackets to secure the table top in place. The top has a deep carved skirt which again is a sign of quality which holds the truly special top of Coromandel. Ideal use as a centre table in a grand entrance hall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Anglo-Indian centre table is a 19th-century furniture piece manufactured in India by indigenous craftsmen for Western patrons, combining European silhouettes like Regency or Victorian designs with native carved detailing and tropical hardwoods.

These tables were typically built using dense local timbers such as Coromandel (calamander), rosewood, teak, or padauk, often incorporating hand-carved bases, inlays, and ebonised highlights.

Coromandel wood, also known as calamander, is identified by its distinctive striped grain featuring alternating bands of dark hazel-brown and black, paired with period-correct joinery, heavy timber density, and original brass hardware.

A circular centre table can be placed in a large entrance hall, foyer, or open-plan living room, functioning as a focal point when contrasted against architectural light walls and modern lighting fixtures.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and heating vents to avoid wood movement or shrinkage. Dust with a clean, dry cloth and apply natural beeswax polish sparingly once per year to maintain the surface lustre.
