This Victorian centre table dates from around 1860 and takes the form of a shaped oval table in dark brown rosewood. The figured timber top displays a high-gloss finish, moulded edges and a wavy outline, sitting above an octagonal turned central pedestal and four splayed cabriole legs. The supports feature ornate relief carving at the knees and terminate in heavy scroll feet fitted with castors. A tilt-top mechanism allows the top to fold upright. Measuring 75 cm high, 108 cm wide, and 145 cm deep, this piece serves as a principal dining or display table in a traditional interior setting. The rich patina and visible natural grain of the rosewood create a warm visual texture suited to a principal living space or study.

A centre table from this period was designed to stand in the middle of a drawing room or entrance hall, serving as a social focal point and decorative feature in formal interiors.

Victorian centre tables frequently featured figured rosewood or mahogany veneers applied over timber frames, complemented by solid carved pedestal supports and brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, thick natural timber veneers with deep grain contrast, turned central pillars, and period-appropriate castors beneath carved legs.

Position the table in an entrance foyer or spacious living room, pairing the rich wood grain with minimalist ceramics or stacked art books for a balanced aesthetic.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or sunlight, and apply natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface luster.
