We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Taxidermy can be styled as a striking focal point in studies, libraries, or living rooms, often paired with dark wood furniture, leather upholstery, and natural textures to create a sophisticated, curated cabinet of curiosities aesthetic.

Taxidermy mounts require protection from direct sunlight to prevent fading, low humidity to deter moisture damage, and stable indoor temperatures. Regular dusting with a soft, dry brush helps maintain the condition of the fur.

Authentic antique taxidermy is typically identified by hand-blown glass eyes, traditional organic stuffing materials such as excelsior or straw, and historical stitching techniques. The condition of the fur, signs of natural ageing, and mounting style also provide clues to the era of creation.

Traditional taxidermy involves preserving the animal skin through tanning, which is then mounted over a hand-carved wooden, wire, or plaster armature. Glass eyes and painted details are frequently incorporated to replicate the lifelike appearance of the animal.

Taxidermy gained significant popularity during the Victorian era, when natural history specimens and wildlife mounts became staple elements of study rooms, libraries, and country homes to showcase scientific curiosity and a connection to the outdoors.
