A Rare National Cyclists Union / Cyclists Touring Club Cast Iron Warning Sign (Pre 1893)

19th century
Sold by Culvertons
Description

This late 19th Century cast iron sign warns cyclists of a dangerous hill ahead. Its a rare survivor and in good condition. This sign was cast between 1883 and 1893. We know this because the original cost of manufacture and display of these warning signs was born jointly by the National Cyclists Union and the Cyclists Touring Club, but in 1894 the CTC took on full responsibility and the NCU's name no longer appeared. I chose to repaint this sign in its original colours of white lettering on a red background so it once again had the impact that the original designers were looking for. For a very interesting article about early signage for cyclists, by a CTC Winged Wheels member, please click on this link - https://www.cyclingnorthwales.co.uk/pages/ctc_wing_whls.htm . I have included an image of the sign prior to it being repainted, and you can just see remnants of the original red base colour. A coat of red oxide was painted on to the sign's surface before applying the top coats. A very scarce and decorative sign.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.
