Taxidermy fox masks and brushes gained popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries, commonly mounted on wooden shields as trophies from fox hunting traditions to commemorate the sport in country homes and estate libraries.

Traditional mounting techniques typically involve preserved animal pelts secured over carved plaster, papier-mache, or wooden forms, fitted with glass eyes, and mounted onto polished hardwood shields with brass fixings.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-blown glass eyes, older methods of taxidermy preservation such as arsenic soap treatments, historical taxidermist trade labels on the reverse, and genuine wear patterns consistent with age.

Such pieces are frequently integrated into traditional study or library settings, styled against dark panelled walls or gallery arrangements to complement rustic or academic aesthetics.

Preservation requires keeping mounts away from direct sunlight to prevent fur fading, maintaining stable humidity levels to avoid cracking of the skin, and gently dusting with a soft brush.
