FAQs

Papier mache objects gained immense popularity in Victorian Britain during the 19th century, particularly in manufacturing centres such as Birmingham and Wolverhampton, where durable paper pulp mixtures were moulded and lacquered.

These items were typically constructed from layers of paper pasted together, pressed into moulds, baked, and finished with multiple coats of dark lacquer or varnish before being hand-painted and gilded.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine crazing in the lacquer, hand-applied gold leaf or japanning, and natural wear patterns on the base consistent with age.

An antique tray can be placed on a coffee table or sideboard to group smaller objects like candles, books, or vessels, adding texture and historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture, cleaning only with a dry or very slightly damp soft cloth, and avoiding chemical polishes.
