Description

Large Victorian mahogany extending dining table complete with four extra leaves and a leaf carrier.

This handsome table with wind out mechanism is raised on substantial bulbous legs fitted with ceramic castors and has four additional leaves.

The extra leaves when not in use are stored in the leaf carrier which has a pierced gallery top and waterfall shelved front, a door to one end enables the leaves to be slotted in.

As you will see from the photos, there are marks / scuffs etc, the table ends and leaf carrier have naturally faded over the years but the additional leaves we don't think have ever actually been in the table which remains in overall good, sound condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, frequently featuring secondary softwoods for internal framing. Craftsmanship typically includes hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and heavy turned or reeded legs fitted with brass castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces can be identified by hand-planed underside surfaces, traditional joinery methods, matching timber grain across extension leaves, and period-appropriate hardware such as brass winding mechanisms and castor wheels showing natural oxidisation.

Pairing a dark wood antique dining table with minimalist modern seating creates a balanced, eclectic contrast. Keeping the surface uncluttered with a single sculptural centrepiece highlights the timbers natural grain while maintaining a clean aesthetic.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting and fading. Clean regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a traditional beeswax polish sparingly to nourish the wood and preserve the finish.

Extending dining tables gained significant popularity during the 19th century as formal dinner parties required flexible seating arrangements. Mechanisms evolved from simple drop-in leaves to sophisticated screw and runner systems, allowing tables to expand significantly for large gatherings.
