Description

Large Carved Cigar Store Indian, Shop Trade Sign

This is a very rare find, he is a full size American Indian, he is carved from one piece of wood ( a tree trunk, possibly pine )

The statue would have stood outside a cigar store, standing out doors would account for some splitting of the wood, there are a few in the length of the statue.

The paint seems to be original, it is bright and in reasonably good condition, our Indian, has high cheek bones and is wrapped in his blanket, wearing native jewellery with feathers hanging from his head

The Statue is 79” tall, and about 14” in diameter at the floor

FAQs

Cigar store figures served as visual commercial advertisements outside tobacconist shops during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They signalled the business purpose to a largely illiterate public before standardised street signage became common.

Traditional shop figures were carved from solid blocks of timber, often pine or oak, using chisels and gouges. They were subsequently finished with coats of oil-based polychrome paint to withstand outdoor weathering.
