FAQs

A holy water stoup is a small basin used to hold holy water, often mounted on a wall near an entrance, featuring champleve enamel where troughs are carved into metal and filled with vitreous enamel.

Antique stoups of this style are typically crafted from cast or stamped base metals such as brass or bronze, often combined with vitreous enamel work and mounted on slate or wood backings.

Authenticity is evaluated by examining the hand-applied vitreous enamel for natural imperfections, tool marks on the reverse metal, and the characteristic patina and oxidisation associated with age.

Such pieces can be mounted on a neutral wall as a focal point in a hallway or styled within a gallery wall arrangement alongside framed art and architectural fragments.

Preservation involves dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes or water immersion to protect the fragile vitreous enamel and aged metal surface.
