FAQs

Majolica pottery gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, introduced at the Great Exhibition of 1851 by Minton and Co. It is characterised by colourful lead glazes applied directly to a buff earthenware body, often featuring naturalistic and classical ornamentation.

These pieces are crafted from moulded earthenware clay, finished with opaque tin-lead or coloured lead glazes known as opacified enamels. The distinctive vibrant colour palette relies on metal oxides such as copper for green, cobalt for blue, and manganese for brown.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit crazing in the glaze, weightiness from dense earthenware, and unglazed or partially glazed foot rims. Makers marks, registry diamond stamps, or impressed shape numbers on the underside are also common indicators of period manufacture.

Such statement pieces work well as sculptural focal points in empty architectural corners or entryways, paired with trailing foliage like ferns or ivies. The rich glazed surface complements both traditional period rooms and eclectic modern spaces.

Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scourers that can damage the delicate lead glaze. Keep them away from prolonged direct sunlight and protect interior surfaces from moisture by using a plastic liner.
