A pepperpot pistol, also known as a pepperbox, is a multi-barrel firearm with three or more barrels clustered around a central axis, popular during the 19th century for personal defence before the widespread adoption of the multi-chamber cylinder revolver.

These firearms typically featured forged steel or iron barrels and frames combined with wooden grip scales, most commonly walnut or mahogany, secured with brass or iron pins.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-correct proof marks, hand-engraved scrollwork on the metal frame, patination consistent with age, and mechanical action typical of mid-19th-century percussion systems.

Displaying historical artefacts requires secure mounting within a dedicated cabinet or on a specialist desk stand, integrating well into traditional study or library environments.

To preserve metal components, maintain a stable low-humidity environment and apply micro-crystalline wax sparingly to bare steel surfaces to prevent oxidisation.
