English Ceremonial Horn from the Ancient Order of Foresters, Circa 1870

This most eye catching piece of British history is a very rare example. It would once have belonged to one of the three hundred or so lodges of the Ancient Order of Foresters which were spread across the United Kingdom.

The Ancient Order of the Foresters was a friendly society established in the 18th century and was very popular throughout the Victorian period. It was created to provide mutual aid to workers at a time when state welfare did not exist.

The horn would be used in ceremonial meetings. It is a lovely piece made from a beautifully coloured polished cow horn with polished nickel mounts and an ornate brass plaque bearing the order insignia.

The horn retains the original green cord with ornate tassels.

This horn is an interesting and decorative collector's piece in very good original condition.
