Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This seventeenth century folk art decorative bowl is a rustic farmhouse oak and hardwood fruit trug finished in dark brown. The hollowed interior is hand-hewn, showing a dark, uneven grain with distinct wear and surface cracking across the heavy timber. Incised star motifs appear on the raised rim handles at the ends, alongside visible splits in the thick wood and a rough-hewn edge along the top rim. Measuring 30.5 cm wide by 71.1 cm deep, the object sits as a dining table center, holding fruit or functioning purely as a decorative display piece in a home. Solid construction and simple utility define the piece, providing a grounded focal point on any surface. The weathered finish brings warmth and texture to interior spaces while highlighting the traditional hand-carved workmanship.

FAQs

A traditional wooden trug or dough trough is a hand-carved timber vessel historically used in country kitchens and farms for mixing bread dough, gathering produce, or storing kitchen goods.

Early wooden trugs were carved from a single piece of dense hardwood, such as oak, elm, or beech, using traditional hand tools including adzes and gouges.

Authentic 17th-century wooden vessels feature hand-hewn tool marks, irregular proportions, natural timber shrinkage over time, and a deep, dark patina from age and handling.

A rustic wooden trough can be placed as a centrepiece on a dining table or kitchen island, filled with fresh fruit, dried botanicals, or displayed empty to showcase its carved texture.

Antique wooden bowls should be dusted with a soft dry cloth and conditioned periodically with clear beeswax polish to preserve the timber; they must never be submerged in water.
