Fine Royal Crown Derby Ewer, Aesthetic Raised Gold Decor, C1884

19th century
Description

A fine pedestal ewer made by Royal Crown Derby at 1884 and decorated in popular then aesthetic movement taste.

An exquisite shape, typically reserved for decorating by the most skilled artists and gilders, of classical ovoid form with slender neck and wavy rim, high scroll handle with Bacchus mask terminal rests on a square pedestal foot.

The decoration is nothing short of superb. The ground is rich iron red with exquisite raised gilding of flowers, foliage and acanthus leaves to base. Combining numerous techniques, like tooling, raised gilding and burnishing, such work was very difficult and only the most skilled and experienced gilders could provide such top quality of work.

Fully marked underneath the base, printed mark in red, date coded for 1884.

Declaration

Touch of Time Antiques has dated this Royal Crown Derby Ewer to the 1880s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 19th century, Aesthetic Movement porcelain emphasises visual beauty, nature-inspired motifs, and artistic refinement over functional utility, often incorporating Japanese design influences, stylised flora, and rich gilding.

Artisans combined fine porcelain or bone china with thick gold enamels, building up layers of paste to create raised, three-dimensional gilt patterns prior to final firing and hand-burnishing.

Authentic late-Victorian pieces typically feature clear factory printed backstamps, year cyphers, precise balance, and high-quality hand-painted gilding without modern transfer prints.

An ornamental ceramic ewer serves as a focal point when positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or inside an illuminated display cabinet alongside contemporary brass or dark wood accents.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or fine brush, avoiding water immersion, harsh chemical cleansers, or abrasive sponges that could strip fragile surface gilding.
