Early Italian Embroidery, Circa 1700, 62cm X 59cm

18th century
Description

This is a delightful Italian embroidery dating to around 1700, if not a little earlier. Worked primarily in wool using the familiar Italian long stitch. Some of the details, such as faces and hands have been embroidered finely in silk. The subject is quite charming, two groups partying in the countryside. The colours and drawing are quite wonderful with some lovely details. Note also the floral border. Now mounted and framed, the entire piece measures 78cm x 74cm. In generally good condition with some minor restoration. This is a very decorative example of Italian textile art which could work in either period or contemporary settings.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Italian needlework from around 1700 frequently depicts complex pastoral scenes, classical architectural elements, and dense floral borders. These textile panels were worked using silk and wool threads on canvas or silk foundations, demonstrating precise figurative composition.

Artisans predominantly employed dyed silk, wool, and occasionally metallic threads on woven linen or silk backings. Common stitches included tent stitch, satin stitch, and long-and-short stitch to build depth and figurative detail.

Authentic period pieces exhibit uneven hand-stitching, age-related fading on light-exposed surfaces, and natural dye variations. Inspection of the reverse side typically reveals brighter original thread hues and historical mounting techniques.

Mounting a framed antique embroidery panel above a console table or mantelpiece creates an intriguing focal point against dark or neutral walls. Conservation framing with non-reflective glass integrates historical textiles seamlessly into contemporary schemes.

Keep antique textiles away from direct sunlight, heating sources, and fluctuating humidity to prevent thread embrittlement. Displaying the item behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free mounting board protects the fibres over time.
