Antique Aubusson Cushion

19th century
Description

A beautiful Antique Aubusson cushion which has been handmade with a silk and soft cotton backing and wool details.  This cushion is feather filled and very soft to handle.  The Aubusson face of this cushion is from an original French tapestry from the mid 19th century in the period of Napoleon III, which has been conserved where necessary and then made into this elegant decorative cushion.

This pairs beautifully with ref.10723 on our website, see the additional images to see them sitting together.

We have a good selection of antique Beauvais tapestry cushions, antique Aubusson cushions and ancient old kilim cushions too.  As well as contemporary pillow cushions from Suzani design cushions and Ikat cushions which are silk and wool all hand-produced in Turkey.

Purchase any of our cushions online and we will securely wrap and ship them to your home.

The Aubusson manufacture of the 17th and 18th centuries managed to compete with the royal manufacture of Gobelins Tapestry and the privileged position of Beauvais tapestry.  Aubusson carpets were produced in the upper valley of the Creuse in central France, possibly developed from looms in family workshops established by Flemings that are noted in documents from the 16th century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Aubusson cushion is a decorative soft furnishing featuring a panel of flat-weave tapestry produced in or inspired by the historic weaving traditions of Aubusson, France. Renowned for detailed floral motifs, central scrolls, and muted colours, these textiles were historically woven from wool and silk to adorn aristocratic interiors.

Authentic Aubusson textiles are woven using fine wool warp and weft threads, frequently incorporating silk highlights for added lustre on detailed motifs. The woven tapestry panels are typically finished with silk or velvet backing and edged with woven passementerie trim and tassels.

Authentic antique tapestry cushions feature hand-woven flat-weave construction with characteristic subtle colour transitions used for shading. The reverse side should reveal hand-stitched assembly, period-appropriate backing fabric, and natural age-related softening of the dye tones.

Incorporate an antique tapestry cushion as a focal accent on a neutral sofa, modern armchair, or layered bedding to add historical texture. Pairing the intricate woven pattern with plain linen or velvet upholstery highlights the detailed craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Preserve antique tapestry cushions by keeping them away from direct sunlight to avoid fading the natural dyes. Dust should be removed gently using a vacuum cleaner set to low suction with a soft brush attachment protected by a mesh screen, avoiding moisture and harsh chemical treatments.
