FAQs

Transferware is pottery decorated by transferring a printed design from an engraved copper plate to paper and then onto unglazed or biscuit ceramic. This technique gained widespread popularity in Britain during the late 18th century as a more efficient method of replicating hand-painted oriental porcelain.

Antique transferware is primarily composed of refined earthenware, ironstone, or creamware, fired at high temperatures. The cobalt blue pigment is applied under the transparent lead or tin glaze, creating the signature glossy finish and deep blue colouration characteristic of the period.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic signs of age, such as fine crazing in the glaze, minor kiln spurs, and subtle variations in the printed transfer lines. Unmarked pieces can be dated by examining the paste, weight, glaze characteristics, and the specific style of the border motifs.

These pieces can be mounted on a wall as a curated display, arranged on a sideboard using plate stands, or incorporated into a tablescape to introduce historical contrast. Pairing them with minimalist decor highlights their intricate patterns and aged texture.

Antique ceramics should be hand washed gently using lukewarm water and a mild, phosphate-free detergent. Submerging them for prolonged periods or using abrasive scrubbers should be avoided to protect the delicate glaze and prevent staining through existing crazing lines.
