A Large Late 19th Century Circular Aesthetic Movement Parquetry Tray

1900 - 1920
Sold 13 June 2025 · Robert Belcher Antiques
This “Large Late 19th Century Circular Aesthetic Movement Parquetry Tray” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Belcher Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This most impressive large scale 19th century aesthetic movement tray has been very skillfully made. It is of a large circular form with a raised edge which has been constructed with block sections of ash and turned on a lathe forming the pleasing curved and raised gallery which is finished with a band of ebony veneer on its top edge. The surface of the tray is decorated with a very complicated geometric design made from hundreds of delicately cut veneer sections which have been individually glued into place to form the stylised flower pattern in exotic timbers such as satinwood, tulipwood, and stained boxwood. This impressive work of art would be very pleasing to use as intended but also display well on a wall or as a centre piece on a table. It is in very good condition with a rich colour and a natural patination.

The Aesthetic Movement emerged in the late 19th century, prioritising visual and compositional beauty over traditional narrative or moral themes, often drawing inspiration from Japanese design and geometric patterns.

Artisans utilised various contrasting natural hardwoods such as walnut, satinwood, and ebonised timber, carefully cutting and fitting veneer geometric segments onto a solid wood base.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut timber variations, subtle ageing in the natural glues, hand-finished surfaces, and construction methods consistent with late Victorian cabinetmaking.

Such pieces function effectively as textural display surfaces on sideboards, coffee tables, or consoles, adding historical depth and craftsmanship to modern minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, cleaning only with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate microcrystalline wax.
