Traditional Kashmiri papier-mache, known locally as Kar-i-Qalamdan, dates back to the 15th century and involves moulding paper pulp over wooden frameworks before applying intricate hand-painted designs.

These items are constructed from macerated paper pulp or layers of paper pasted together, coated with plaster, smoothed, and finished with vibrant natural pigments protected by clear varnish.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight, the presence of craquelure in the varnish, hand-mixed mineral pigments, and the tight, seamless bonding of the paper layers beneath.

An antique tray can be displayed flat on a coffee table as a decorative base for candles and books, or mounted vertically on a wall as a piece of folk art.

Preserve the piece by keeping it away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding all liquid cleaners or polishes.
