Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Foliate relief carving with punched background: decorative woodwork from the late Victorian period.
Spindle-turned legs and low stretchers: machine-lathe work standard in the late 19th century.
Scalloped lower apron profile: ornamental shaping typical of domestic furniture of the era.
Two-plank oak top with slight joint movement: naturally seasoned solid timber.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian oak side table, dated 1880, presents a dark brown timber finish with a square top featuring hand-carved foliate patterns, leaves, and sunflower motifs within a patterned border. The construction incorporates a scalloped apron, four turned columns with rounded feet, and matching bobbin stretchers connecting the lower frame. The table measures 61 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Practical for everyday use in a traditional interior, the piece functions well as an occasional table, a lamp stand, or a display surface positioned beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa. Its compact footprint fits comfortably in living rooms, studies, or reception spaces, providing a stable platform for lighting, books, or decorative objects.

FAQs

Victorian carved oak furniture often draws design influence from earlier Renaissance and Jacobean styles, featuring heavy relief carving, dark timber stains, and elaborate turned support structures.

Tables from this period were typically constructed using solid oak joinery, including mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved top panels, and hand-turned leg spindles strengthened by low stretchers.

Authentic pieces generally display signs of hand-carving irregularities, natural age-related shrinkage in the timber, authentic dark oxidation in deeper relief areas, and period-appropriate joinery techniques.

Position the table beside a sofa or upholstered armchair to hold task lighting. The deep wood tones and relief textures contrast well against neutral walls and contemporary textiles.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth, entering carved crevices with a soft brush. Apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timber finish, and avoid placing near direct heat sources.
