Confit pots are traditional earthenware vessels crafted in rural France, primarily used in the historical preservation of meats such as duck or goose confit. Their distinct design typically features a glazed upper portion and an unglazed lower body intended to be buried in cool cellars.

These pieces are traditionally thrown from local terracotta clay, featuring a porous unglazed lower half and a lead-based or mineral glaze applied to the upper shoulder and interior to ensure liquid retention. The glazes often exhibit characteristic variations ranging from honey yellow to rich ochre.

Authentic period pots display distinct signs of hand-thrown construction, such as uneven thickness, asymmetrical profiles, historical chips, and crazing within the glaze. The unglazed terracotta often shows age-related patina, mineral deposits, and surface wear consistent with functional agricultural use.

Confit pots serve as versatile decorative objects that anchor rustic or transitional spaces. They can be displayed empty on surfaces to highlight their sculptural form, or used to hold dried botanicals, branches, and kitchen utensils.

Due to the porous nature of the unglazed earthenware and historical fragility of the glaze, these pots should be dusted gently with a dry cloth. They are not watertight for prolonged periods and should not be subjected to harsh detergents, soaking, or mechanical dishwashing.
