Marylebone Antiques has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The top section can be positioned at an angle to support sheet music, or it can be locked into a flat position to be used as a table. The brass rise and fall mechanism works well, the height can be adjusted to a wide range of sizes. This stands on a beautifully carved tripod base that also has fine satin wood inlays.

This would also be very useful as a menu holder in a restaurant / bar setting.
We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age.
The wood is Santos rosewood, and does not require a CITES or article 10.
