Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Staffordshire flatback spill vases are 19th-century English earthenware ornaments designed with a flat rear surface to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece. They feature a hollow tubular section designed to hold rolled paper spills or splints used for lighting fires and candles.

These figures were slip-cast or press-moulded from white earthenware clay, covered in a clear lead glaze, and hand-painted using overglaze enamel colours. Decorative details such as foliage or moss were often created using shredded clay applied before the initial firing.

Authentic pieces generally display an unglazed or plain flat back, small firing holes in the ceramic body, and subtle crazing in the lead glaze. They usually lack manufacturer marks, as small Victorian potteries rarely marked their everyday production items.

Display these ceramic figures on a mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or window sill alongside contemporary ceramics or botanical displays to create visual contrast. Grouping several flatbacks together on a side table or console table provides an engaging focal point in traditional and eclectic interior schemes.

Clean flatbacks gently using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove dust from delicate crevices. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or using harsh chemical solvents, as moisture can penetrate glazed crazing lines and damage original overglaze enamels.
