Large Volume Antique Book, Faust, Goethe, German, Illustrated Fiction, Victorian

19th century
Description

This is a large volume antique copy of Faust by Goethe. A German, bound fiction book, dating to the late Victorian period, circa 1880.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a German writer, poet, playwright, and philosopher, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Western literature. His most famous work, Faust, is a tragic play that follows the story of a scholar who makes a pact with the devil, in pursuit of ultimate knowledge and pleasure. The play, written in two parts, explores themes of ambition, human limitations, and redemption. Beyond Faust, Goethe made significant contributions to poetry, drama, and prose. Goethe was deeply involved in science, particularly in optics, and his Theory of Colours (1810) presented a critique of Newtonian colour theory.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian bindings often utilised half or full leather, frequently morocco or calfskin, adorned with gold foil tooling along the spine. These volumes featured raised spine bands, marbled paper or cloth boards, and gilded page edges to offer both protection and visual elegance.

19th-century books were constructed using vegetable-tanned animal hides, heavy pasteboard, hand-marbled paper, and cotton thread bindings. Decorative embellishments were added using metal finishing tools pressed with genuine gold leaf.

Authentic period books display characteristic age marks such as natural foxing on rag paper pages, surface patina and rubbing on the leather, and genuine raised spine bands created by the underlying sewing structure rather than modern stick-on faux bands.

Antique volumes can be stacked horizontally on a coffee table or arranged vertically on open shelving alongside brass or stone decorative accents. Placing a single large volume on a reading stand or desk creates a refined focal point in study spaces.

Store antique books vertically in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Handle covers with clean, dry hands, and avoid applying commercial leather conditioners that can cause long-term chemical deterioration.
