Sword sticks, or cane swords, gained popularity during the 19th century as a discreet means of personal protection for gentlemen walking through urban areas at night.

Authentic pieces typically feature shaft materials like malacca wood, exotic hardwoods, or bamboo, combined with steel blades, silver or brass collars, and handles carved from dense woods such as lignum vitae or horn.

Authentication involves examining the forge marks on the steel blade, checking the locking mechanism for the scabbard fit, and inspecting the natural ageing, patina, and wear on the materials.

This type of historical artefact integrates well into a study or library display, mounted securely on a wall or placed within a specialized display case alongside other antique militaria.

The steel blade should be occasionally treated with microcrystalline wax or light oil to prevent oxidation, while the wooden shaft benefits from conditioning with neutral beeswax to maintain moisture.
