Snuff bottles were introduced to China during the Qing dynasty as tobacco use gained popularity. Artisans crafted these small vessels from various materials, including porcelain, jade, and glass, often reflecting imperial tastes and traditional motifs.

These vessels were typically thrown or moulded from fine-grained white clay, then painted with cobalt blue pigment before being glazed and fired at high temperatures. Stoppers were often made of contrasting materials like jade, hardstone, or metal.

Authentic pieces feature characteristics such as hand-painted cobalt detailing under a clear glaze, specific foot rim formations, and often imperial reign marks on the base. Examining the weight, clay body, and glaze crazing also aids verification.

These miniature objects work effectively when displayed in small groupings inside glass cabinets, on bookshelves, or atop side tables alongside books, allowing their intricate details to be appreciated up close.

Antique porcelain should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or submerging repaired pieces in water.
