Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century French wall thermometer is a functional instrument set upon a vertical, off-white painted wooden backplate. The piece incorporates a central glass capillary tube filled with red alcohol, flanked by a calibrated scale numbered from minus ten to fifty degrees Celsius. Metal brackets secure the tube in place, while a protective open-coiled metal guard encloses the bulb at the base, and a small loop at the top provides a means for hanging. The sides of the wooden mount are painted red, showing subtle signs of age with minor wear along the edges of the pale surface. Measuring 30.5 cm high, 5 cm wide, and 1 cm deep, the compact item is suited for placement on a narrow wall space in a study, hallway, or gentleman's library.

FAQs

A nineteenth-century alcohol thermometer, or spirit thermometer, uses coloured alcohol rather than mercury contained inside a glass capillary tube to indicate ambient air temperature against a calibrated numerical scale.

These instruments were constructed using a hand-calibrated glass tube mounted onto a painted or carved timber backplate, held in place with metal brackets and protective wire or cast guards.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-drawn or engraved numerical markings, hand-blown glass capillary tubes, traditional European temperature scales, and original metal hardware displaying natural surface oxidation.

Mount the thermometer on a slim wall section, within a gallery wall, or near an entryway to serve as a functional conversation piece alongside botanical prints or architectural drawings.

Keep the object away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the timber backplate from warping and to protect the fragile glass capillary tube from accidental impact.
