We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

During the Victorian period, mass industrialisation combined with a fascination for the natural world led to a boom in whimsical, animal-themed desktop items. These functional desk accessories, ranging from inkwells to pen wipes, often featured detailed animal castings designed to add character to the study or office.

Antique pen wipes typically combined cast metals such as brass, bronze, or cast iron for the structural figures and bases, paired with natural fibre bristles, velvet, or stacked wool fabrics designed to safely clean steel nibs without damaging them.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy, quality metal casting with hand-finished chasing details, natural wear patterns consistent with age, and period-appropriate fasteners or construction methods rather than modern adhesives or synthetic materials.

Such items serve as excellent conversation pieces on a home office desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece, where their tactile brass textures and historical charm can complement both traditional study spaces and eclectic contemporary interiors.

Preservation involves dusting gently with a soft, dry brush and avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip away the historical patina. Items should be kept in stable humidity conditions away from direct moisture.
