This large French letter rack originates from circa 1900 and represents the Rococo Revival style. Produced from cast brass with a warm brass finish, the object contains two compartments, an integral top carrying handle, and four decorative feet supporting a rectangular base. The openwork casting displays intricate acanthus scrollwork alongside a central cherub mask motif. Signs of age include a darker patina within the recessed decorative details. Measuring 20 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, the item functions as a practical accessory on an office desk or library table for sorting correspondence. The design suits studies, living rooms, and traditional interiors seeking period decorative metalwork.

FAQs

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, French metalworkers frequently revived eighteenth-century Rococo motifs, incorporating elaborate foliage, asymmetrical scrolls, and cherub motifs into functional desktop items. These pieces catered to the growing popularity of formal letter writing and decorative home office furnishings.

These letter racks were typically manufactured from cast brass or bronze using sand casting or lost-wax techniques. Following casting, the metal was hand-chased to refine delicate surface details and polished before developing a protective lacquer or natural patina.

Authentic period pieces display crisp relief detail, natural wear along handling areas, and aged oxidisation within deep recesses. They often feature heavier weight compared to modern reproductions, along with traditional slotted screw fastenings on assembled sections.

An antique letter rack functions effectively on a contemporary executive desk, hall console table, or sideboard to sort daily mail and stationery. Its metallic finish complements dark wood, marble, and neutral plaster backgrounds.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth or soft-bristled brush to remove accumulation from pierced areas. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, which can strip away historic patina and surface details.
