A Large Desk Compass

19th century
Description

A large estate office or library desk compass 20cm in diameter. Contained within a fine mahogany case with a removeable glass. The removeable glass would mean that this large compass could be transported easily without damage. The paper compass rose shows the main cardinal points and both azimuth and quadrant scales. The steel magnetic needle is original and has a mounted centre jewel which sits upon the pivot point. The needle is chamfered on the underside at each point. The north of the needle has a tiny brass insert dot. The whole works perfectly and can be brought accurately to level by adjusting the three supporting legs to the base.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique desk compass is a directional navigational instrument constructed to sit horizontally on a desk or chart table, featuring a magnetic needle and calibrated dial within a protective casing.

Historical compasses were commonly manufactured from non-magnetic metals such as brass or bronze to avoid interference with the magnetic needle, alongside dense hardwoods like mahogany or teak, covered with protective glass.

Authentic period compasses feature signs of age such as natural metal oxidisation, hand-engraved or early lithographed dial cards, period manufacturer stamps, and mechanical fittings like threaded brass levelling screws.

A desk compass serves as a functional decorative object placed on an executive desk, library bookshelf, or sideboard, complementing dark timber furnishings, leather accent pieces, and classical metalwork.

Maintain the piece by removing dust with a soft, dry microfibre cloth while avoiding abrasive chemical polishes that remove age-acquired patina. Keep the instrument away from high humidity and strong magnetic fields to protect the internal dial.
