Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cameo carving dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, though shell cameos gained immense popularity during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Artisans carved relief portraits into sea shells, utilizing the natural colour variations between the layers to highlight the design.

Antique cameos were typically carved from natural marine shells such as helmet or conch shells, or semi-precious stones like agate. These carvings were subsequently mounted into yellow gold, silver, or pinchbeck frames.

Authentic shell cameos show slight hand-carving irregularities under magnification, translucent depth when held to light, and natural striations in the shell layer. Moulded plastic or glass imitations lack structural layer variation and often feature uniform, smooth backs.

A shell cameo pendant can be worn on a modern gold chain against dark fabrics such as velvet or silk to highlight the relief carving. It can also be paired with simple tailored clothing to create a contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary silhouettes.

Shell cameos should be kept away from extreme dry heat, direct sunlight, and harsh chemicals, as natural shell can desiccate over time. Occasional light lubrication with mineral oil helps preserve the moisture content of the shell material.
