Description

A magnificent antique French gilt wood marble top console table. This was made in France & I would date it from around the 1880’s period.

It is of outstanding quality and is extremely impressive. It is a great size, the gilt wood frame has beautiful carving and a lovely patina. The marble top has absolutely stunning colours and patterns.

The condition is excellent for its age, with only some minor age related surface wear here and there.

FAQs

French giltwood furniture typically features a carved wooden base covered in a thin layer of gold leaf, often associated with neoclassical or baroque design traditions popular in European salons.

Authentic period pieces are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, pine, or beech, which are then gilded and topped with a slab of natural marble.

Authenticity is assessed through joinery techniques, tool marks on the hand-carved wood, the ageing process of the gold leaf, and the type and geological characteristics of the marble top.

Interior designers often use these ornate pieces as statement focal points in hallways or living spaces, contrasting the classical detailing with contemporary artwork or minimalist lighting.

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the delicate gold leaf, and protecting the porous marble surface from acidic spills.
