FAQs

The Napoleon III style, or Second Empire, emerged in France during the mid-to-late 19th century, drawing inspiration from historical eras like Louis XIV, XV, and XVI while incorporating eclectic, ornate detailing and rich marquetry.

These pieces frequently utilise exotic hardwood veneers such as walnut, rosewood, and mahogany, often enhanced by intricate floral marquetry, parquetry, fire-gilt brass mounts, and cast bronze ormolu.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut veneer work, traditional joinery methods such as dovetailing in the drawers, hand-forged or cast hardware, and natural ageing characteristics like timber oxidation.

To integrate an ornate antique table into a contemporary setting, pair it with minimalist seating or use it as a striking contrast against neutral walls to highlight its craftsmanship and historical texture.

Maintain wood marquetry by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or drying, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the polished surface.
