Victorian door stops gained popularity during the 19th century as coal-fired heating and draughty homes made functional door control necessary, leading to ornate cast metal designs.

Traditional door stops from this period were predominantly cast in heavy metals such as brass, bronze, and iron to provide sufficient weight to hold heavy interior doors open.

Authentic pieces typically feature heavy sand-cast construction with sand-core interiors, natural ageing, tool marks from hand-finishing, and a deep patina rather than modern uniform plating.

An antique metal door stop can be used functionally in a hallway or styled purely as an objet dart on a bookshelf or mantelpiece to add metallic texture and historic character.

Antique brass should be cleaned gently with a soft cloth to remove dust; harsh chemical polishes and abrasive cleaners should be avoided to preserve the historic patina.
