A rare pair of Art Deco Elephant Bookends. A delightful pair each showing an Elephant balancing on a barrel. Each signed Franjou across the centre of each barrel. Franjou is a pseudonym used by Hippolyte Moreau. Made from spelter, with glass eyes and ‘balancing’ atop a barrel on a variegated grey marble base. The Elephants are cold painted gold and the barrel is cold painted dark brown. Excellent original condition with light wear commensurate with age. A couple of very small nibbles to the marble base. French c 1920
Franjou – Hippolyte Moreau (1832-1926) Moreau studied under Francois Jouffroy in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited at the Salon of French artists from 1863 to 1914, where he received medals for his work. He produced a variety of decorative and everyday objects, including vases, statues, trays and bookends
