Fine Regency Rosewood Library/ Writing Table

19th century
Description

Fine Regency Rosewood Library or Writing Table

A fine English Regency rosewood library or writing table, dating to the early 19th century.

The table has a well-figured rectangular rosewood top with a moulded edge, positioned above a practical arrangement of drawers. It is supported by elegant turned and carved end supports, united by a central stretcher and raised on boldly shaped feet with brass castors.

The rich rosewood displays attractive grain, warm colour and a pleasing patina developed through generations of use. Its restrained proportions and architectural form are characteristic of the finest Regency-period furniture.

Designed to be both practical and decorative, the table would work beautifully as a library table, writing desk or freestanding centre table. Its finished appearance makes it particularly suitable for placement in the centre of a room, study, drawing room or traditional interior.

The table remains solid and usable, with expected marks, small blemishes and signs of age throughout. There are some marks to the top and an age-related expansion split, consistent with the natural movement of timber over approximately two centuries. These details have been retained as part of the table’s history and do not detract from its considerable decorative appeal.

A handsome and increasingly difficult-to-find Regency rosewood table with excellent presence, useful proportions and an authentic period character.

Period: Regency, early 19th century

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the early 19th century in Britain, Regency writing tables are characterised by clean classical proportions, dark exotic timbers like rosewood or mahogany, and fine brass accents.

Craftsmen typically used solid mahogany frames clad in rich rosewood veneers, embellished with brass castors, mounts, or beaded borders, alongside leather or wooden writing surfaces.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-sawn timber underneath, genuine rosewood grain patterns, traditional dove-tail joinery in drawers, and period-appropriate brass hardware.

A Regency writing table works effectively as a focal piece in a dedicated home office, positioned against a light backdrop to contrast the dark timber, or placed behind a sofa in a formal living room.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid cracking or fading. Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year.
