French farmhouse tables originated in rural France, where they served as the central hub for daily family life, food preparation, and communal dining. Constructed by local craftsmen using regional timbers, these utilitarian tables were built for durability and everyday use.

Traditional farmhouse tables were built using solid hardwoods native to the region, predominantly oak, cherry, chestnut, or elm. Joinery typically involved robust construction techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged frames, and heavy plank tops designed to withstand heavy wear.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina, hand-planed surfaces, irregular plank widths, and signs of historical wear such as indentations and oxidisation around the fixings. Hand-cut joinery marks, traditional wooden pegs, and older types of hardware also indicate genuine age.

Pairing a large wooden table with contemporary seating, such as minimalist metal chairs or upholstered modern designs, creates a balanced juxtaposition of old and new. Keeping the tabletop uncluttered with simple centrepieces allows the natural grain and historical character to remain the focus.

Maintain the wood by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the grain. Avoid placing the table in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and always use coasters and mats to protect the surface from moisture and heat.
