FAQs

Victorian doorstops emerged in the 19th century as coal-fired central heating became common, leading homeowners to use heavy door porters to prevent draughts from internal doors.

These pieces were typically produced using sand-casting methods, where molten iron was poured into sand moulds, then hand-painted with oil-based pigments before being lacquered.

Authentic period pieces exhibit heavy weight, significant surface wear, layered polychrome paint with natural ageing, and crisp casting details with sand-textured undersides.

Placed functionally beside a heavy internal door or repurposed as a decorative paperweight on a desk, it introduces industrial weight and historic charm to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the piece by keeping it in dry conditions, gently dusting with a soft brush, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could damage the original painted surface.
