Pair of Victorian Hand Painted Tiles

19th century
Description

A pair of hand painted ceramic tiles dating from the late 19th Century. One depicts a coastal scene and the other a bridge over a river in a more mountainous landscape. Neither are signed. They are both framed in nice quality black wooden frames which compliment the tiles.

They are in very good condition for their age. There are no major damages and the colours are bright and vibrant. There is some slight crackle crazing to the glaze on the coastal scene but they still display very well. The frames are in good order. They have been lightly cleaned and are ready to hang.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, hand-painted ceramic tiles became popular decorative items, often depicting natural landscapes, maritime scenes, or botanical motifs. These tiles were used both as architectural accents in fireplaces and furniture, and as standalone framed artworks for display.

Victorian painted tiles were typically made from dense earthenware or clay, glazed, and painted with enamel pigments before being fired to fix the design. They were often mounted in simple wooden frames, such as oak or mahogany, to allow them to be hung as wall art.

Authentic period tiles often display surface crazing in the glaze, visible brushstrokes from hand application, and hand-imprinted or raised maker marks on the unglazed reverse side. The frames often show age-appropriate wear, square-cut nails, or traditional joinery methods.

Display framed tiles as a paired gallery installation on a narrow wall space, above a mantelpiece, or styled on a bookshelf alongside textured stoneware. Their compact scale makes them ideal for adding historic character to hallways, alcoves, or small wall nooks.

Dust tiles gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water which can damage the glaze crazing or wooden frame. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity to preserve the pigment stability and prevent wood warping.
